Our skin – both male and female – needs regular exfoliation to remove dead skin cells and combat dullness, but it can be harsh on sensitive complexions. Try this if you’re allergic to shop-bought exfoliation products: mix two heaped tablespoons of oatmeal (finely ground oats) with 2 teaspoons of double cream and rub gently on to the skin using your fingertips.

Everyone knows Thai cuisine for its tom yum goong and savoury grills, but it is not so easy to define the national cuisine of Thailand, even with so many foreigners and Thais ready to declare their favourites – tom yum, pad thai, yum nuea (spicy beef salad), gaeng kiew wan (green curry), som tum … the list goes on.
Thailand is a country with a mosaic of different races, it geography, its climate and its prosperity and abundance of natural products give great variety to its cuisine – and these same assets are key to its potential.
Regional dishes are related to their homeland’s culture, ecology, social structure and racial diversity. Chinese and Indian immigration to Thailand and French, Portuguese and Dutch imperialism in past centuries certainly influenced Thai cuisine a great deal. The cooks of Siam learned about deep-frying and porcelain kitchenware from the Chinese. They also adapted the spices and replaced the milk and yoghurt in Indian cuisines and adapted them in to more hot and spicy curries of their own. With the exception of snacks such as noodles, green papaya salad, or a single portion of curry over rice, Portions are served on platters and meant for at least two people.
Everything on the table is an accompaniment to rice, the most important component to rice, the most important component of the meal. Generally the rice is served with a curry, a fish dish, a stir-fry, a salad, a soup and vegetables. All the food is served at once. Unlike European tradition, soups come in a large bowl and are eaten with the meal, not before it. Meals begin when the host says “kin khao” or “eat rice”.
